Admittedly, that's a bold move for sitting in a tight space for hours, but as long as you pick a pair with a little stretch in it, it's also absolutely workable, and obviously chicer than your beloved leggings. Based on five specific outfits Crawford wore to the airport in the '90s, I've put together a shopping list for your next trip that should make you feel like a model off-duty on your way to, like, Mauritius or Gstaad, or wherever it is that models hang out.

The key to making an all-black outfit not feel boring is to play with texture, a principle Cindy Crawford knows well. All it takes is a silk black shirt, a crisp black jean and a velvet or pony black shoe. So simple yet so smart.

This is a fantastic outfit, and not just because of Crawford's megawatt smile. All the cool girls know that a well-chosen pair of dark sunglasses chic-ifies any look at the airport and beyond. Not that this almost-all-black outfit with light-wash jeans needed any help to begin with.

I've never been one to look glam at the airport, and I'm okay with that. As long as I'm not pulling up to the terminal in hole-ridden sweatpants and a stained college tee, I consider it a win. When it comes to airport style, my expertise is comfort, not elegance. That's why I was particularly pleased with the shoes I chose to wear on my most recent trip. Flying from Los Angeles to Honolulu and back, approximately five and a half hours each way, I wore Ugg Classic Micro Slip-Ons ($139), which debuted in May 2025. It was the first time I've boarded a plane in these particular shoes, and now I'll never go back.

Why do I love them for flying? Let me count thy ways. I would feel too casual at the airport in full-on house slippers, but I still want footwear that slides on hands-free because I don't like touching my shoes on the flying cesspools of germs that are airplanes. I want shoes to keep me warm on chilly flights, where I'm often freezing, but I would sweat too much in Ugg boots walking through seemingly never-ending terminals. In other words, these slip-ons are the perfect hybrid of slippers and boots, taking the best qualities from both, and excluding the attributes that make them unsuited for traveling. When people think about a job that allows you to travel the world, they think of it being exciting and adventurous, a chance to see new cultures and have new experiences. They’re not wrong, but there’s also a downside to all the travel: the delays, the jet lag, and the fact that, for me, I’ve travelled to over 15 countries for work, and the majority of the time, all I see is the airport, the city from the taxi, the inside of my hotel room, and the photo studio. Sometimes, I’m lucky to be shooting on location, like when I shot in the streets of Cartagena or on the beaches in Bali.

So with over 15 countries under my belt, it’s safe to say I’ve taken many a flight in my time. It’s slightly concerning and I’m sure not good for me.

I have an app on my phone called Flighty, and according to the data it pulls, I’ve travelled 33.3 times around the world, taken 371 flights, been to 70 airports, and taken 157 long-haul flights.

I’ve got my travel routine down. From what to wear on a plane to how to beat jet lag, I really am a seasoned pro. Who else can get on an 11-hour flight to Paris and work on a beauty campaign the next day and look fresh? Me, that’s who, and I’m going to help you feel beauty-campaign ready too.

The first step to looking campaign ready post-flight is to get on the plane and feel comfortable. Comfortable is a subjective term because I don’t know how comfortable you really are on a long-haul flight. If you can’t sit in business and your leg room is constricted, the last thing you want is for your clothing to be too. Here’s what you should be wearing on a plane.

What I’ve learned from observing other models' travel styles and being on a plane for quite literally most of my life:

You can always tell who’s the model on the airplane. Because we’re on planes every week, sometimes even multiple flights a week, we’re over looking good; we just want to be comfortable.

The reality is, the majority of us models don’t fly business class. You’d think we would because we’re the ones who literally need to look good behind the camera straight off a flight, but more often than not, we’re in the back of the plane just like the rest of you.

There’s the comfort-is-key girl. She’s in a matching tracksuit and faux-fur coat. She’s got the LV luggage and Rimowa suitcase, neck pillow, and eye mask in row 45.

Then you’ve got the I-won’t-be-seen-dead-in-a-tracksuit girl. She’s wearing a matching cashmere set and trench coat because we all know how crazy a plane’s temperature can be, and cashmere is amazing at regulating your body temperature. It’s also antimicrobial, so you won’t be as smelly post-flight as you would be if you were wearing synthetic fibers. It’s the same for merino wool too.

Then there’s the activewear girl. Activewear on a plane is fine, but leggings aren’t. Leggings that aren’t compression leggings can actually swell your legs more, and as someone who retains water the second I step on a plane, that’s the last thing I want. I love these pants from Monday Body and the matching top. The reason I love Monday, specifically, is that there’s inbuilt boob support, so no bras on a plane and definitely no underwire digging in to my swollen body at hour 13. Pair it with a comfy hoodie or cropped bomber jacket and Uggs (nothing better than wearing slippers on a plane).

And the bravest of them all, the jeans-on-a-plane girl. This girl is most likely flying business class and has a change of clothes (pajamas) to sleep in. I’ve been that girl, usually when I have to go straight to a fitting off the plane, so I’m meeting the clients and need to look presentable. Let me tell you this: It’s such a lovely feeling, putting on a fresh outfit after you’ve woken up from (hopefully) sleeping for at least six hours. It’s honestly delightful. I’ve also slept in my denim. Denim is totally doable; it just needs to be light and baggy.

The truth is I’ve been all four of those girls at some point over my 371 flight-taking journeys.

Arriving camera-ready after long-haul flights:

I don’t do a full-step skincare routine on a plane. There’s a lot of bacteria flying around despite what the airlines say. I’ll always do a final skin routine either at home before I go to the airport or in the lounge before I get on the plane. Sometimes if I’ve got time on a layover, I’ll slug on a sample of something in duty-free too, usually La Mer. The benefit of the full-step routine is then locked in with an excellent barrier cream. My favorites are the Bonjout Beauty Le Balm, Dieux Instant Angel Moisturizer, Weleda Skin Food, Rhode Barrier Butter, and U Beauty Super Hydrator.

The tip to looking camera-ready after a long-haul flight is to pop on some eye patches when there are about two hours to go. Then, around breakfast time, try to be the first one to the bathroom once they’ve cleared your meal, and brush your teeth. Then, with the Ursa Major face wipes, wipe your face, spray some hydrating mist (I love the Chantecaille Rosewater spray, the Caudalie Eau de Beauté, or the MV SkinTherapy Hydrating Mist), and lock it in with a good moisturizer or face oil.

Your in-flight strategy:

At the end of the day, the outfit and skin prep can only do so much to help you feel fresh on the other end. I’m sure it goes without saying, but you’ll feel a million times fresher if you save the alcohol until the welcome drink at the hotel. I always have two water bottles, one regular water (because I don’t think the water service on planes is adequate), and one with electrolytes in it.

I always travel with an eye mask, ear plugs, and a neck pillow, and will always adjust my phone’s time to where I’m going the second I sit down on the plane. Part of feeling fresh is trying to adjust as quick as possible to the new time zone. Sometimes I’ll even skip the meal service if it means I can get on the right schedule, especially if I’m working the next day.

After 371 flights (probably more by the time you read this) and over 15 countries, this routine has saved me from countless uncomfortable flights and ensured I can go straight from the plane to set. The key isn't looking Instagram-perfect at the airport; that’s literally not real life. We’re all tired, and it’s okay to look like it! But it's about arriving at your destination feeling human enough to actually do your job or enjoy your vacation. Trust me, when you’re on an airplane for 10+ hours, being comfortable is key, but you don’t have to look like you’re in your pajamas.

Whether you’re heading to Europe or just hopping on a quick work trip, the looks ahead balance fashion and function perfectly. I’m talking relaxed suiting sets, effortless loose trousers paired with tanks, and monochrome looks that feel intentional but zero stress. Style Notes: Zoe Saldana mastered airport style in New York this October in an outfit centered on simple, elevated basics. She wore baggy straight-leg jeans (a more comfortable fit for flying) with a cardigan and a sweeping ankle-length camel coat. Her Saint Laurent Bea bag is big enough to house all her in-flight essentials, while the slip-on loafers are a sensible option for breezing through security.

Style Notes: Ariana Grande is well aware that even pictures of her at the airport are an unofficial part of her press tour for Wicked. Pink has been key to her Glinda method dressing, and so she arrived at the Sydney airport in an oversize rose-colored shirt by Loewe with baggy jeans, crystal-embellished ballet pumps, and a Squeeze bag all by the Spanish house.

5. Madelyn Cline

Style Notes: If you wouldn't do a long-haul in anything but a pair of leggings, then Madelyn Cline is your airport styling muse. She wore a pair of ALO's flared leggings with split-hem detailing revealing her black trainers but then added extra polish with an oversize Prada blazer, a jumbo Bottega Veneta bag, and a don't-look-at-me baseball cap. Sticking to an all-black color palette is an easy way to make the outfit look more cohesive and tailored—you almost don't notice she's wearing leggings.

6. Jennie Kim

Style Notes: We can't all travel with a Chanel 2.55 bag like Jennie Kim. However, the rest of her outfit is a practical choice for any travel plans. She opted for a barrel-leg pant silhouette, which is a more fashion-forward choice, paired with a classic, cozy cardigan and a scarf looped around her neck that will then handily double up as a neck pillow mid-flight.

7. Katie Holmes

Style Notes: This is an outfit to bookmark for your summer travel plans, but a word of warning—it will require some confidence that you won't spill your in-flight meal during turbulence. An all-white outfit always looks expensive, and Holmes's ecru wide-leg denim and cream canvas carry-on duffel bag is an elegant duo.

8. Elle Fanning

Style Notes: The arrivals hall at the Nice airport during the Cannes Film Festival has become an extension of the red carpet and photo calls, and Elle Fanning was certainly prepared for the line of photographers in her Bottega Veneta mint-green suit and matching carry-on bag. This is the definition of first-class energy.

People-watching at the airport is one of my favourite things to do—especially around the cooler seasons when travellers are getting creative with dressing for cosiness. Many of the outfits you see will be all coat, though, so let's talk about the most important part that you will see: airport winter shoes.

Wearing the wrong shoes to the airport has the potential to ruin your travel day, but luckily, there are so many current winter shoe trends that you won't regret wearing for your flight. This jumpsuit outfit, while certainly chic, seems much more fashionable than functional. Completely disrobing to use the restroom is not ideal, especially in the air, and wearing a one-piece makes it unavoidable. Blanchett's matching white sneakers, however, are a step in the right direction.

Style Notes: I'm saving this outfit for short flights when I'm planning to meet someone shortly after. It's the perfect elevated but casual travel look. The thick black headband adds the right amount of '90s/Y2K trendiness. The powder-blue sweater draped over the shoulders makes this look too good to pass up. It screams sophisticated and stylish, and I'd pair it with a pair of clogs or ballet flats. The watch gives this outfit a Princess Diana or Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy feel.

Style Notes: When I'm navigating a busy airport on a warm day, I'm reaching for this simple, comfortable outfit that will keep me cool. The loose-fitting shirt and drawstring trousers feel like pyjamas, but look a whole lot more put-together. The real star of the show here is the sandals. Style Notes: If you're like me, airport outfits usually consist of an athletic set. I am a fan of these when I'm taking a trip to a warm, sunny destination. Athleisure sets have been the lazy girl's saving grace for airport outfits since their conception, and I believe the best place to wear them besides the gym is the airport. Now, if you decide to work out while on vacation, you're covered.

Turner was recently photographed at the airport wearing an Ugg outfit that was downright elegant. As cool as Uggs are, it isn't that easy to make them look elegant, given how casual they are. The pair the Turner opted for was the brand's wildly popular platform Tazz Slippers. She paired them with straight-leg jeans and a long black coat. I love to get away whenever the opportunity arises. I mean, who doesn’t like an adventure? With 2024 winding down, I am thinking of some end-of-the-year getaways to check off my 2024 travel bucket list. I already have a cozy cabin trip to Upstate New York and an international trip to Guatemala for my best friend’s birthday, so now that those are on my calendar, it’s time to focus on the important things: what I’m going to wear, both on the trip and on my travel days.

There is nothing like a good sweat set for a travel day. The key to making this outfit look more put together is the right colors and the perfect low-key but cool sneakers. I also added my favorite wireless headphones because ever since I got my hands on them, I don’t travel without them. Trust me, you’re going to love them.

But honestly, it wasn't her outfit as a whole that struck me when I first saw photos of it, but just her pants, which I couldn't help but notice would be utterly perfect for flying.

The specific style is from the London-based brand Susamusa and made of a comfy jersey fabric that a frequent flyer like myself looks for when planning travel outfits. Truth be told, I wasn't planning to write about what I wore on this recent little jaunt to London. It was all a bit last minute and—if my past impromptu travels are anything to go by—really should have resulted in a far less successful packing situation. Somehow, between my recent efforts to ruthlessly cull my shoes and boots down to a five-piece footwear capsule and my current "fewer better things" shopping mantra, the pieces that landed in my suitcase managed to provide more than enough outfit combinations to get me through five nights in London.

Even if you're not traveling anytime soon, building out an intentional winter capsule is a great way to feel good about your wardrobe.
